The Road to Nairobi

In 2017, Storylines was invited to lead a workshop + presentation covering the intrinsic therapeutic value of storytelling at the 4th Annual JENGA Training Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Donations were collected from family + friends and hand-delivered to Eutychus Academy Riruta, a high-school in rural Nairobi and Toto Angel, an orphanage.

Captured exclusively by iPhone, this film captures my road trip to visit these organizations.

THE ROAD TO NAIROBI by Joseph Alan Wachs Filmed over the course of two days while visiting a children's home and two high schools in Nairobi, Kenya in East Africa. July 13th & July 14th, 2017 while participating in The Annual JENGA Training Conference. Equipment: iPhone 6S Plus only. Edited with iMovie on a Mac. Additional Cinematography captured at the Eutychus Academy Riruta in Nairobi, Kenya by Mr. John Shimoli Kalani, Assistant Teacher-in-Training at the Eutychus Academy Riruta in Nairobi, Kenya. JENGA | The East Africa Psycho-Social Network is a professional network of psychologists, psychiatrists, artists, storytellers, drug and alcohol counselors and others working in MHPSS in East Africa. ABOUT THE FILM Upon receiving donations from family and friends, we visited the children for whom the funds were raised to see first hand their schools and get to know them. We were immensely impressed by the love and care bestowed upon these children, but more so, we were impressed by the children themselves; a clear sense of vision, faith, and humanity could be found in the eyes of every child and we thank the leaders of the organizations for committed a large portion of their lives to providing these children with the love and support they deserve. TOTO ANGEL CENTRE Founded in 2013 and is now supporting 30 children both boys and girls between three and 12 years from a variety of tribes and backgrounds. They are given education, food and clothing. They also conduct parent evenings and community meetings to make sure they remain in close contact with the community members. Otherwise it would not be possible to help them. The community in which the centre is situated is characterized by a high prevalence of HIV, illness, poverty, gang related crime, illicit brew, alcohol and drug addiction and unwanted pregnancies. This situation leaves a large number of children in the area vulnerable, neglected and abandoned by their caregivers. Any funds raised help immensely with fresh fruits and vegetables, school supplies, and furniture for the school and boarding resources. EUTYCHUS ACADEMY RIRUTA Founded in 2003 provides high school children with the resources they need to pass the government mandated tests for education. The compound on the outskirts of the city contains approximately 300 students, while the school in the rural area has 60 students. The vision is to shift the 300+ students from the city to the land owned by the school in the rural area. If and when funds are raised, the school will be able to drill past a layer of rock to pump the natural water source for drinking, washing, and irrigation of the land, which is quite fertile, simply awaiting water. Stories communicate ideas that drive the listener into the inner world of the imagination...This inner world helps the East African people share their own understandings through their own personal language.
